The Ship who Sang

I have lots to say about Helva, to me she is just so complex! She has the tender heart needed to take great care of her passengers, she is so plugged in to what is happening all around her at all times emotionally because of how she watches body language and pays close attention to verbals. Helva is so open to helping with Romeo and Juliet even though she is a little concerned about the envelopes it is exciting to be part of the production. So Helva has all these great emotions and positive womenly ways about her right down to how she checks out every single male that come abboard her ship. There is a masculine side to Helva as well!! Helva does know how to think logically without emotions when she has to. Helva is not affraid to tell anyone where to go if there is a conflict that she will not tolerate. Helva in times of stress has great critical thinking and problem solving skills that end up literally saving the men on her ship. I love that there is no need for some man to save Helva. Yes she would love a regular Brawn to work with her but she's ok by herself, strong by herself like Katsa in Graceling. I am happy Helva decided not to live her life in the envelope!! She is the ship and the ship is her the combination really makes Helva the perfect balance between feminine and masculine

  1. I like your points on the balance of Helva. She really is quite a balanced character in a situation where being balanced may be hard with kind of disconnect she has between herself and the other humans or passengesr aboard. I think Romeo and Juliet was excellent for her because it gave a her alittle tatse of something she hasdn't known before or was otherwise unlikely to experience. Another interesting point you brought up was how Helva has a keen eye for body language and verbal tones, i think she may have an even greater sense of it than most of the non shell people in the novel because her shell forces her to really try harder to connect and she can observe thinsg in a different way. Overall i'd say she is quite the interesting and thought provoking character.

  2. I love that line you wrote about not needing a man to save her. That is so true. Helva has proven that she is very capable of taking care of herself and does not need a brawn. The fact that she wants a brawn for companionship shows just how human she still is. Just because she is trapped in a shell does not mean that she is not human and cannot feel emotion. She hass needs and one of those needs is human companionship. She is very independent and does not want someone to take care of her. Nor does she want someone to take care of. She simply wants someone to share her life with. Someone to go on adventures with and share in the excitement and joy of their travels. I also love your comparison to Katsa. I hadn't thought of that before but it is so true. Katsa does nto need a man either and is just as happy travelling on her own and helping people but knows that there is a part of her that needs some companionship. You have some very good ideas and offer very thought provoking statements.
