Graceling

I love this book!! I am getting so much out of this story. In class we discussed how there was some gender and identity issues happening with Kasta. We also touched on the fact that she is so young and never really experienced anything other than being a killer. Now that she met Po I really believe we will see this book take a turn and Kasta's emotions will really start to blossom. I do see this happening already when Kasta and Po are eating lunch and the King comes to summon Kasta. She is automatically furious. Po sees this instantly and tries to calm her. Kasta in the end ends up hitting him so hard he falls off of his chair. This stike happens after Po says he will not fight her in anger. Po states you do not fight your friend in anger ever. Kasta has no idea what the hell he is talking about so she hits him anyway and when he does not defend himself Kasta automatically feels horrible for hurting him. Kasta now understands what he meant and swears she will never hit him in anger again. This to me is where their relationship is starting to form more than just combat and skills partners. I really think they are both attracted to one another but Kasta is experiencing all these emotions for the very first time in heer life so she has no idea what to do with all this new warm feeling stuff.

  1. I agree on some points, like Po being a huge turning point in Katsa’s life. He’s like no one she’s ever met before- and he can fight her. He can fight her and actually have the possibility of beating her. Now there’s something exciting. I don’t know if anyone else would agree with me by saying Katsa might find the idea of being defeated thrilling, but if I were here, I’d be excited by the prospect. After all, think about it: Katsa, raised to be an undefeatable weapon of sorts. Everyone fears her because she can’t be overpowered. Then comes in someone who has the power to defeat her, to make her seem more human in the eyes of others. A chance to not be shunned because of what she is…

Or that’s just me reading into it. But I rather like my theory, ha ha! But as far as liking Po….I wouldn’t say that, not right now. Yeah she feels bad for hitting him in the enemy’s court, but I thought it was more because of how she was already taking the easy way out when disposing others. At the time, something seemed different about him. To me, it was a regret to not fulfill that curiosity. At the moment, I think that’s what Po is to her. An anomaly. Something different. She wants to get close, but not because of a crush, I think. It’s just more of a “he’s different, do I really want to trust him enough to find out why?” kinda thing.

  2. I am really enjoying the book as well! I think that is the coolest part of this book, is the fact that now that Po is in Katsa's life, everything is changing for her. She is having more emotions than ever before, but I think it is all for the better. I think she will become stronger mentally ( hopefully not physically! ) and will learn to take care and stand up for herself. I know Katsa doesn't realize truly how much she really likes Po. ( or maybe thats my own thought) I am looking forward to their relationship growing and more adventures. I think the fact that Katsa and Po fight each other is cute in its own way. They get a kick out of kicking each others ass literally! I also love the fact that this book is a nice easy read. Not a book with a bunch of vocab words I dont even understand. I like a book that will keep me involved and not too hard on the brain. I am hoping that the other upcoming books in this class are similar to this one, or some what close!

  3. The fact that Po has entered her life changes everything for Katsa. She already took a huge step in the right direction by taking Po to see his grandfather. That shows that she trusts him and he already said he trusted her. In my eyes Po could potentially be very good for Katsa and I don't think hes going to walk away any time soon. I love how when she was kicking his ass he was laughing. Katsa was probably so confused by this, after all shes never been in a situation like that. Hopefully she will continue to trust Po and a relationship will form. Its not like that would make her life less complicated because at her age everything is complicated, especially boys. But maybe it will help her feel a sense of normalcy. I'm so relieved that this book is more of the corny cliche type. It makes it easier to relate to, compare and understand.

  4. Katsa i believe is a very confused little girl still. She is getting trust with Po and that does show alot with her that she is actually trusting someone instead of uhhh killing them. BOYS BOYS BOYS like "tract6715" said. Katsa doesn't know what to make of him laughing when she is kicking his ass at first but then they both enjoy it which is semi weird. (or atleast to me) This story is going to turn out way different then i expect i think. I'm def excited to see where this book ends up.!
